5 things to do in DeLand, Florida

DeLand, Florida, is pretty idyllic—and it’s not just because of its picture-perfect downtown. Located about halfway between Orlando and the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, the city of about 40,000 in Volusia County offers something for just about everyone. In fact, it was nicknamed “The Athens of Florida.”
From the stately buildings of Stetson University (Florida’s oldest college) and the bustling downtown to the quiet of the nearby springs, there’s no shortage of things to explore in DeLand…you might even find yourself wanting to call it home! Here are a few of our favorite things to do in DeLand that you can check out.
Explore Historic Downtown DeLand
Historic Downtown DeLand is exactly what you imagine a quaint downtown would be. With locally owned and operated boutiques, shops and other businesses, you can spend many hours just wandering and strolling.

Step back in time at the Stetson Mansion
History lovers, this one is for you! This spectacular mansion was built for famed hat maker John B. Stetson. The Stetson Mansion has the title of being Florida’s first luxury estate. Travel up and down the luxurious halls to witness some of the most dazzling parquet floors, not just in Florida, but in country. Tours are offered various times throughout the year. Catch a show at the Athens Theatre
Who doesn’t love a good show or movie? The Athens Theatre is situated in Historic Downtown DeLand and is a fully restored historical theatre that is still functioning to this day. The theatre dates back to the early 20th century and was designed by prominent Orlando architect Murray S. King.

Immerse yourself in nature at Hontoon Island State Park in DeLand
Located on the St. Johns River, this State Park contains evidence of Native American habitation. Visitors can enjoy nature, hike and explore the historical grounds. Possible activities include paddling, fishing, hiking, biking and much more.
The island is only accessible by private boat or park ferry, so it feels very exclusive. Admission is free into the park and hours are from 8 a.m. to one hour before sunset. Click here to learn more.

Have a love for all things creative? Immerse yourself in art at the Museum of Art—DeLand. There’s plenty to explore in the permanent collection, but there are also regular special exhibitions, as well as events, camps, classes and more.
